Interviews with survivors as well as with the "Secret Sisters" who joined religious life during this time provide a glimpse of how these faithful women lived out their vocations in the underground until after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Join us in the Cathedral Undercroft for a fascinating testimony of faith, courage, and endurance.

<a href="http://www.satodayscatholic.com/resources/1/Archives/2009/112009/Interrupted.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Emil Kapaun may not be well-known. But he should be. The son of Czech immigrants, Fr. Kapaun grew up on a small Kansas farm. But this seemingly ordinary farm boy became one of the most inspiring heroes of the Korean War-and unlike many war heroes, this military chaplain is also on the road to sainthood. His cause for canonization has been opened by the Diocese of Wichita, and two medical miracles attributed to him are being investigated by the Vatican. He has also been nominated for the highest military medal, the Medal of Honor.

In this powerful documentary, learn his inspiring life story, his heroic work as a chaplain during battle, and his leadership and comfort of fellow American prisoners after capture and torture by the Communists. This imprisonment under incredibly harsh conditions ultimately led to his death at 35 years of age in 1951. The film features interviews with the soldiers who were imprisoned with Kapaun in Korea, as well as with church officials, military historians and the Kansas family who is convinced Kapaun's miraculous intercession saved their son's life. A man of incredible courage and faith, he is credited with saving the lives of hundreds of prisoners, instilling them with hope when all hope seemed lost.

... Who should see this? Everyone. Age-appropriateness? High school and up. A great film for college campuses. There are no gruesome photos of dismembered or salinated babies (on purpose, although those have their place, too), but former abortionists and post-abortive women do describe abortion procedures and procedures gone (very) wrong.

This extremely professional, engaging, precisely-edited 2010 documentary was written and directed by David Kyle with an emphasis on educating Americans about how abortion became legalized in this country, about the incredibly blatant lies, deceit (e.g. "abortions" on non-pregnant women), lack of regulation and bundles of money (much of it undeclared) being made off of abortion, as well as the physical/psychological/spiritual ramifications on everyone involved in abortion. Men (fathers) as both victimizers and victims of abortion is also touched upon. Narrated by the elegant Dr. Alveda King (Martin Luther King Jr.'s niece),

CATHEDRAL UNDERCROFT -- Thursday evening at 7 PM.

OCTOBER 7 --- LEARN THE ROSARY !!!

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; May is considered the season of the beginning of new life. Already in Greek culture, May was dedicated to Artemis, the goddess of fecundity. In Roman culture, May was dedicated to Flora, the goddess of bloom, of blossoms. The Romans celebrated ludi florales (literally: floral games) at the end of April, asking the intercession of Flora for all that blooms. This is also related to the medieval practice of expelling winter. May 1 was considered the beginning of growth.

Since medieval times, we have had the combination between Mary and the month of May. Here and elsewhere, both Mary and the month of May are greeted, welcomed and celebrated on specific days in May. Later, the whole month of May became the month of Mary. On each day of this month, special devotions to Mary were organized. This custom originated in Italy (for example: Ferrara, 1784). It was spread widely during the nineteenth century, a century well-known for its monthly devotions (Heart of Jesus in June; Rosary in October).

Join us! All are welcome.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://cathedralthursdaynight.blogspot.com/2010/05/may-crowning-cathedral-school.html' title='MAY CROWNING & Always enjoy being with people or need some time alone? Prefer to lead others or prefer to work as a team? The four classical temperaments designate a person's natural tendencies in the way he/she acts and relates to the world. Originally based on an ancient theory about the "humors," or fluids in the body, the four temperaments are still a valuable key for understanding ourselves and others. They can also be a key to understanding and growing in the spiritual life. Find out what temperament you have and how understanding your natural tendencies can aid you in your prayer life.

THURSDAY EVENING
MARCH 18
Lenten Soup 6:30 PM
Presentation 7:00 PM

Thursday evening, March 11

Part Two of our study will continue to look at the structure and themes of the four different Gospel narratives of Christ's Passion. Robert Barron of the Archdiocese of Chicago.

The great heritage of the Catholic Church is presented in a ten-part series, a truly global journey: from the lands of the Bible, to the great shrines of Europe, to the shores and heartland of America, from the mysteries of Asia, to the rich landscapes of Latin America, to the beating heart of Africa – and beyond.

This global vision of the Catholic Church has never been seen in this way before. The Cathedral Undercroft is honored to be one of the very first venues in the US to see Part One (60 minutes) of this exciting new series!
